The speakers and their messages

Mr. Juma Muwanguzi and Mr. Emmanuel from Awesome minds Speak Uganda. Delivered a message about sexual reproductive health and educational values. They advised the students to abstain from sex until the right time and that is after school and with the right person. They as well had interactions with the students to get their opinions about the two topics, where they based on the various submissions to inform and correct the students. They had various illustrations and quick challenges and it was fun for the students due the way they were active during the session.

Ms. Maria and Mr. Moses from mental health Uganda talked about mental health and their main point was self-esteem. They chose volunteers from students with whom they asked what their talents were and what they knew and believed about themselves, this was more like confidence building. They went ahead to advise the students to be bold enough to take on opportunities that come before them, to stand out, speak up and to avoid situations and things  that are most likely to put their mental health in a risky situation. These were accompanied by a number of illustrations and real life examples.

Mr. Fred Murungi gave an introduction about their company Accent klarsk, talked about what it does which is graphics designing and introduced Mr. Roland his colleague. Mr. Rolland talked about innovation; he asked the students what they understand by innovation and the two that answered gave a right answer which was that innovation is where you put an idea into play or work. He said that it’s awesome to have ideas but its better if you put them into action. He applied this to talent, he said it’s wonderful to have a talent but if you do not go ahead to find ways of acting upon it then it goes wasted. He did a quick challenge where he got a number of volunteers and asked them brain storming questions where the winner received a well branded t-shirt of Accent Klarsk.

Mr. Mbaziira Bryan was the representative who spoke on behalf of Talent Walls. He introduced what Talent Walls is all about, its mission, vision, and its programs and how they run. He encouraged the students to never give up on their talents. He used the informative word boards from talent walls to pass on some helpful information to the students. He called out a few volunteers from the students to select a word board, read out loud the message written on it and as-well explain to the rest what they understand by that message. All the volunteers gave right answers and so he just added on their particular submissions to make them understand more and more.

Mr. Adilu Geoffrey and Ms. Hope from Cyclops defense systems talked about security, its importance to the community and the whole nation at large. They informed the audience about Cyclops defense systems and what it ventures in which is security for people and their property. They went ahead to point out the various kinds of security which includes security guards, security items which include surveillance cameras, gun teasers among others. They went ahead to ask the school if they do have fire extinguishers and if the students know how to use them. They as-well encouraged administration of Tropical High School to highly consider security of the school, its property, the students and their property as-well. They concluded by promising the school two fire extinguishers depending on how they were to later discuss and agree with the school administration.

Mr. Ssubi Henry Kiyimba a first year student at Makerere University who became famous after reporting to campus with a metallic suitcase and literally nothing because he valued education more than material things. He advised the students to stay in school and hold onto that opportunity because many children out there have no access to education. He as well told them to stay in school so as to get knowledge on how to manage their talents.

FEED BACK FROM THE STUDENTS

The sessions were interactive, students were allowed to ask questions and as-well give submissions. At the end of all the sessions a number of students were selected to fill in the feedback forms about how the event turned out and what they learnt from the sessions.

AMBASSADORS

The very last activity on the event was the panel selection. During this session the students were given a chance to come up on stage and give a performance according to their various talents. According to each category, the students were put up for a challenge where whoever won in their category was selected to be an ambassador or representative depending on their delivery. The selected ambassadors are the ones to represent their school in the various activities that Talent Walls will have in the future.

CHALLENGES

The students were not cooperative at the start of the event as they had to be forced to enter in the school main hall where the event was taking place.
